The Mitutoyo 500 series ABSOLUTE Coolant Proof Caliper is a digital caliper that is dust and water resistant, crafted from durable hardened stainless steel using Mitutoyo's ABSOLUTE linear encoder technology. This caliper conforms to IP67 protection levels, enabling it to operate in workshop conditions exposed to water, dust, coolant, or oils.

While functionally identical to dial and vernier calipers in making precise measurements, the digital caliper offers an LCD that displays readings in both inch and metric units. This enhances the reliability of the measurements and reflects all ABSOLUTE system activities. The caliper features accessible function control buttons, such as Origin to set and retain the original measuring point, On/Off to automatically shut off the device after 30 minutes, and Zero/ABS (Absolute Scale) to zero-set the LCD display. The Absolute Scale (ABS) function tracks the set origin point, even after the caliper is turned off. When powered back on, the caliper can immediately start measuring without the need for zero resetting. The LCD can also be "zeroed out" before making and comparing incremental measurements, eliminating the need to subtract the first measurement from the second.

The 500 series ABSOLUTE Coolant Proof Caliper utilizes Mitutoyo's ABSOLUTE electromagnetic induction linear encoder to help prevent overspeed errors. It can measure outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), depth, and step, with the butt end of the fixed jaw measuring one end of a workpiece before its upper/lower or inner/outer "steps" are measured. The LCD resolution is .0005" (0.01mm), and the repeatability is .0005" (0.01mm). The caliper is IP67-certified, meaning its electronic components are resistant to debris and temporary submersion in liquid. An alarm alerts the user to low voltage and counting value composition errors. A rolling thumbwheel enables fine adjustments, and a thumbscrew locks the scale's position. The response speed is unlimited, and the caliper is powered by a single SR44 silver oxide cell battery that typically lasts approximately 3 years with normal use.
