The Mitutoyo ABSOLUTE 500 series caliper is a Digimatic digital caliper made of durable, hardened stainless steel. It utilizes Mitutoyo's ABSOLUTE linear encoder technology, allowing you to "set and forget" the origin and measure in awkward or difficult locations. This digital caliper features an LCD readout and function control buttons on its face, including Origin to set and retain the original measuring point, On/Off to automatically shut off the caliper after 30 minutes, and Zero/ABS (Absolute Scale) to zero-set the LCD display. It operates using the metric measuring system.
While identical to dial and vernier calipers in its ability to make precise measurements, the digital caliper's LCD clearly displays values, increasing reading reliability compared to other types. The Absolute Scale (ABS) function tracks the origin point you set, even after the caliper is turned off. Once powered on again, the caliper can immediately start measuring, without the need for zero resetting or concern of overspeed errors. The LCD can be "zeroed out" before making and comparing incremental measurements, eliminating the need to subtract the first measurement from the second.
The ABSOLUTE electrostatic capacitance linear encoder used in these calipers helps prevent overspeed errors. The calipers measure outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), depth, and step, with the butt end of the fixed jaw measuring one end of a work piece before its upper/lower or inner/outer "steps" are measured. The LCD Resolution is 0.01mm. Additionally, the calipers feature origin-setting, zero-setting, and on/off automatic shutoff function buttons. An optional Data Hold Unit (sold separately) provides a Digital LCD Data Reading Hold function.
Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, and machining to measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They can make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, depending on their type. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers provide direct and accurate readings, with the digital caliper offering the convenience of a zeroed display at any point along the slide and an LCD that displays a single value in English and/or metric units.
Mitutoyo, founded in Tokyo in 1934, manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company's Mitutoyo America Corporation, headquartered in Aurora, IL, was established in 1963.
